Boxing Gloves Explained: Types, Sizes, and What They’re Used For
Not all boxing gloves are built for the same job. The glove you hit a heavy bag with is different from the one you spar in, and both differ from the gloves used in a sanctioned bout.
Main types of boxing gloves
Bag gloves have denser, firmer padding and less wrist support so they hold up to repeated heavy-bag work. Sparring gloves use softer, thicker foam to protect both you and your partner and usually weigh 14–18 oz. Competition gloves are lighter (8–10 oz) and designed to meet event regulations. Training gloves sit in the middle and are the usual choice for general gym sessions.
Choosing the right size
Glove weight is measured in ounces. As a rough guide, fighters under 60 kg usually train in 10–12 oz, mid-weights in 12–14 oz, and heavier athletes in 14–16 oz. For sparring, go up a size so there is more cushioning.
Materials and closure
Genuine leather lasts longest, while high-grade PU is lighter on cost and easier to maintain. Hook-and-loop closures are quick to put on; lace-ups give the most secure fit for competition.
